This composition is based on a good mix of round shapes. The various sizes and surface textures ensure there is no monotony, while the bright colours add a welcome aspect of liveliness to the basic circle-in-a-square theme.

Red Drama

While I've had this bottle in my collection for years, it wasn't until I added the cork that I was able to make it work in a composition. I believe having that bit of light at the top defines the bottle and keeps it from being overly obscure. The chunky round shape seemed a good match for an equally chunky pomegranate.

A Few Figs

The holiday season always brings a few special items to my local grocery store and this is week it was figs. Thank goodness I picked up quite a few of these beauties, as I cut open four before I found one with insides that I liked. The first three, while perfectly delectable, were too perfect for my taste. Lucky number four had a nice texture and uneven edges with the red centre bleeding slightly into the creamy outside edge.

Companionable Silence

Although this piece has a fair amount going on, the elements work well together to create a quiet atmosphere. The bowl on the right was originally a larger green one, but changing it to a smaller black one allowed me to dissolve it more into the background and move towards a more cohesive composition.

Off Center

I love a square format, mostly because I believe it lends a contemporary look and feel to my otherwise classical work. A square canvas almost demands a centered composition, but I think I made this little canvas work by deliberately creating a balanced tension between bottle and fruit.

The exaggerated height to width ratio of this canvas further emphasizes the shape of the pitcher. Though I had originally sketched this piece out as a 24" x 12", going to a larger size challenged me to keep my brushwork simple yet believable.

Imperfect

This old ginger beer bottle was loaned to me by a good friend and loyal follower of this blog (thank you Carol). As the title suggests I was drawn to it for its imperfect nature. Setting it on an old whitewashed wooden crate seemed a good marriage. Keeping the composition to basics allowed me the freedom to include some detail in the old nails and uneven wood.

Reflections on Red

Short and Sweet

My imperfect enamelware pitcher is shown to advantage here with the help of an elevated viewpoint. The repeating elliptical shapes create a kind of rhythm and the red/green/blue colour notes keep the composition fresh.

Facets and Folds

While I generally shy away from props with a formal personality, I fell in love with the faceted sides of this pitcher and knew they would introduce a geometric element not often found in my work. These edges, echoed in the sharp folds of the yellow cloth, are balanced by the organic shapes of the fruit.

Concerto for Pitcher

If a concerto can be loosely described as having one solo instrument accompanied by an orchestra, then my white jug is that instrument and the remaining objects the orchestra. As classical music is my soundtrack of choice in the studio, it is perhaps natural that some compositions are derived from this art form. Likening the white pitcher to the full round sound of a cello is perhaps a stretch for most people, but not for me.

With a title borrowed from Paul Simon (and Eastman Kodak) I created my version of a saturated colour story. The bold reds, blues, oranges and yellows cover the spectrum but are held in check by the dark monochromatic background.

Blue Plums

There was a lot of delicious detail in this combination of elements, in particular the colourful reflections and bright highlights. While my original plan was for a smaller work, sizing up to a 24 x 18" gave me more freedom to include what I felt to be necessary to the success of this painting.

Adding the worn cutting board to the background really brought this otherwise predictable composition together. The warm wood tones, as well as the strong back and forth horizontal, pull together the foreground elements making for a more cohesive composition.

Herb Garden: Basil

In this small painting I have combined the regular shapes of man-made objects with the organic shapes of basil and garlic to create a balanced contrast. Losing some of the hard edges of the bottle and bowl adds an element of intrigue to this little drama.

A Simple Abundance

Simple abundance is far from a new concept. Sarah Ban Breathnach has sold countless books extolling the virtues of simple abundance. It can also be found in the writings of Deepak Chopra, the teachings of Ghandi, the words of Solzhenitsyn, Buddha...and countless others. It is also an oft-occurring theme in my work as well as the work of other artists through the centuries. Whether in the form of a book, a poem or a painting, I am convinced everyone can appreciate the merit of this concept.

Night Light

Focused light, moving left to right, strikes the edge of the indigo fabric creating a streak of blue/white to reveal some of the colours in the grapes before hitting the cut fruit and stoneware. A few more grapes and a golden apple stop the viewer's eye from continuing off the canvas.

Blue Trim

What enamelware may lack in grace is balanced out by its undeniable charm. This little jug is a case in point. The sides have an ever-so-slight bulge and the spout is almost ridiculously small — and yet, rather than detract from its form, these oddities actually add to its appeal. The bright blue trim adds a great colour spark and provides a crisp contrast to the white.

Dolce Vita #5

As I continue to receive positive comments on my wine series, I decided to revisit this subject focusing more on fresh fruit.

This composition has a great mix of saturated colours, consequently I found myself using an extensive range of pigments including four yellows, three reds, three blues, a green, one earth tone and a white. Phew!

Melon Half

Blue Bowl and Minneola

This painting is another take on last week's piece, with a few changes and substitutions. While the most remarkable difference is in the format, colour also plays an important role in taking this concept from languorous to lively. The larger and greener grapes provide more of a colour jolt and the bowl is a more saturated blue. I like both paintings, finding each to have its own distinguishing aesthetic

Minneolas

While I admit this is a rather unusual format, I found it suited my subject matter beautifully by further emphasizing the casual left to right roll of the fruit, as well as the unravelling peel. The thick skin and contrasting pith of the minneola adds a nice dimension and texture to this lovely fruit.

Muscat Grapes

Although these particular Muscat grapes are called "pink", they are, in reality, a breathtaking combination of translucent reds and greens. I composed this piece around the grapes, choosing items that would support this nuanced colour mix.

Sweet Ambrosia

I had originally purchased these lovely apples to appear in my wine series, but after having them sit around in my studio for a few days I realized just how magnificent they were on their own. This simple composition hinged on creating an interesting pattern with the graphic shapes of the cut apples.

And to be honest, I just loved working with apples called Ambrosia, meaning food of the gods.

Miche et miel

A neighbour of mine works at our local patisserie and, knowing I was interested in bread as a painting subject, dropped this "miche" by my studio. The inside texture of a loaf can be amazing and once I cut this one open, I knew I had the beginnings of an interesting composition. The old fashioned style of this bread inspired this unassuming composition using simple honest fare.

I am fortunate to live and work in a community where many folks know what I do and are ready to contribute a favourite vase or bowl, treasured family heirloom, or in this case, a loaf of bread... Merci encore Sylvie pour votre délicatesse !

Dolce Vita #4

The fourth in my Dolce Vita series has an even more banquet-like feeling, with lots of colour to "feast" on. Although I have really enjoyed working on this series, I feel it might be time for a break. Oftentimes doing the same subject over and over can lead to a form of complacency; so I want to put this subject aside for a while before I reach that point. My plan is to come back to this with fresh enthusiasm at some point in the future.

Dolce Vita #3

After completing two smaller paintings I felt ready to tackle a larger, more involved piece. I used lots of textures here and was especially pleased to find a pomegranate at this time of year.

Again, because of the perishable nature of the cheese and fruit, particularly under hot spotlights, I had to work quickly. To extend the life of my props, each night I wrapped the individual pieces and refrigerated everything, rebuilding my set each morning.

Dolce Vita, #1

This painting was inspired by my recent research into BC's Okanagan Valley, known in part for it's vineyards and wine festivals. This is the first piece in a series that I am titling Dolce Vita, or, good life, as represented by the bounty of the area. Compositions such as this are endless in their variety of colours and textures, a feast for both the palette and for the eye of the artist. The only possible drawback being a rather "fragrant" studio as the cheeses melt under my hot lights.

Grapescape

I have remarked here before that some paintings seem to paint themselves; such was definitely not the case here.

I started with a 12" square canvas of grapes sitting on that lovely white packing paper they often come shipped in. Once I was satisfied with my composition, I headed out to buy fresh grapes to replace the now wilted ones on my set. Back in my studio the new grapes would simply not sit right, and as a result of my fiddling around, the once crisp paper had lost its fresh shape. Frustrated I replaced the paper with waxed paper and though it did not have the same form, this paper did have a nice translucent quality. But now, instead of height, I had a width...and the width required more elements to make a satisfactory composition. Long story (and 3 alternative formats) short, I arrived at this painting.

Years ago, I naively believed that painting would be become easier as I gained experienced. Not so. As the bar is raised, it has actually become harder. Perhaps my next piece will be one of those elusive paintings that paints itself.

Honey & Lemon

The traditional pairing of honey and lemon brings to mind the comforts of home. I created this painting with that same thought in mind, and perhaps to offer an antidote to March weather and the seemingly endless days of winter.

Forelle Four

Despite their diminutive size, these pears pack a great colour punch. By placing them on a highly reflective surface, I was able to exploit the colour further in the foreground. The black background was key in playing up the brightness of both the pears and vase.

Sonya Apples on Green

The green cloth was a nice change of pace from my usual white and serves as a wonderful contrast to the reds and yellows of the apples. Keeping both the foreground and the background dark provides a heightened sense of drama and encourages the viewer's eye to concentrate on my main subject.

Cherry Glass

I picked up this glass months ago, drawn to its simple shape and fleur-de-lis motif. Its proportions sit comfortably in the square format and I felt the chunkiness of the glass contrasted nicely with the linear cherry stems and the delicate, frayed edge of the white linen.

Triumvirate

By positioning my light source to pass through both transparent bottles, I was able to pick up beautiful reflections of the red and yellow liquids, enlivening what may have been a rather sombre piece. I was also mindful not to over-work the delicately frayed edges of the linen cloth. Ginger Golds in Folds

This painting took me a few tries to get the right balance of dark background to light foreground. As in last week's piece, the subtle suggestion of the table’s edge keeps the apples from tumbling into space and serves to dissect the foreground in two planes.

Lemon Lineup

I had this composition floating around in my head for almost two weeks before I was actually able to start it. Consequently, I was quite excited to I finish up what I had on my easel and start putting this piece together. Once I was satisfied with the arrangement of the lemons I turned my attention to the placement of the cloth, taking particular care with the positioning of the blue stripe.

Fruit Plate

As often happens during the development of a painting, undervalued details not really considered in the original composition become great additions to the main subject. Here, a simple plate of fruit is made into something a little magical by the cast shadows of the fruit. While I had quite purposefully arranged a nice pattern of shadows, it was actually the colours of these shadows that belatedly captured my attention and brought the painting to an even better conclusion.

There are the ladies from MacPherson who, while they specialize in doll-making supplies, carry some of my favourite brushes and have the best shipping department around. There is Anthony who works for UPS. His calm and quiet demeanour soothes my nerves when handing over 6 months worth of work to be shipped right across the country. And there is Lawrence, who works at my local market and always takes special care when handling my carefully chosen "props". Lawrence suggested pairing this newly purchased bottle with wild garlic, but I had already had my heart set on these artichokes. Still, a good idea and he should know how much I appreciate his input. Ingredients #3

I had been working on this composition, on and off, for two weeks before finally putting paint to canvas. I spent the first day roughing in the large shapes and the next rendering a glass jar filled with fresh tarragon sprigs. This latter part of the composition would be the first to fade, so I wanted to bring it to almost a completed stage before moving onto to the bottles. By the end of the day I realized that no matter how nicely painted, the jar and feathery herb shapes of the tarragon did not belong in this composition and, after about 8 hours of work, I rubbed it out, replacing it with the red bowl. As an experienced painter I felt I should have seen this compositional error sooner, but mistakes are often part of the process.

The next day back in the studio with fresh eyes, I realized I had truly made the right decision—the red bowl was an infinitely better fit. The end result is a great piece, much stronger than it would have been had I stuck with my original composition.

Special Request

I believe it is only human nature that makes one want the painting that just went out the door under someone else's arm. Consequently, I frequently get requests for a painting similar to another, and while I try my best to meet all requests, it can be a bit tricky. What was the initial appeal...the colours? subject matter? format? Often, it is nearly impossible for the client to articulate what the attraction was and I am left to draw my own conclusions.

This painting was one such request, and while it is nowhere near a duplicate, it has the same basic tone and feel as the initial work. I do not know if this "substitute" will work for my dealer's customer, but I do know it's a very good piece and not simply a rehash of another. Now, I'll just keep my fingers crossed.

Summer Fruit Harmony

Nothing says hot summer days quite like a slice of watermelon, so before the season completely runs out, I had to try my hand at this luscious subject. Its iconic triangular shape is softened by the addition of other fruit, making this composition not only about colour, but also about strong hard-edged shapes. Using the white jug as an anchor, the graphic shapes of the fruit fit together and create what I feel is lovely seasonal harmony.

The title is not a typo, but rather a way to express how I see the colours of red and green working so well together that they become one. The waving cherry stems add a lot of movement and their linear quality offer a nice counterpoint to the larger masses. This piece has a very tactile feeling, which, unfortunately, does not translate well into an electronic file. As always, art really does have to be seen in person.

Fruytagie is a Dutch term meaning fruit piece and was used in the seventeenth century to describe what we now classify as the genre of Still Life. As this painting has most definite roots in the classical tradition, I thought it appropriate to resurrect an old term. I have drawn upon my recent small pieces to arrive at this more ambitious composition, but I am looking forward to returning to a few more 12" compositions.

Strawberry Preserves

Cutting the berries in half gave me a whole new palette to work with. The inside of a strawberry is absolutely luscious, but just as the season is fleeting, the berry's tender heart must be painted quickly before it too loses its fresh appeal. This is my way of "preserving"!

My already extensive collection of bottles just grew bigger with the addition of this little bottle of oil. Its proportions are perfect and I love its diminutive size. The raised lettering, O & CO, gives added personality to the piece. This composition packs a great deal of interest into a small space and it has a tone I find very appealing.

It is my goal to do a number of these small compositions in the coming weeks. Given my 6-month drying time, they will be ready just in time for Christmas!

Not all paintings work out. After a few days of struggling with an idea that simply wouldn't gel, I pulled out a few of my favourite things, and just like the song, things start to look up.

This red jug has starred in many successful paintings, and is a joy to paint. While the colour is wonderful, I think it's appeal has more to do with shape and proportion. Add some colourful fruit and a bowl in a complementary shape and I have a can't-fail composition.

Brown Sugar Berries

While it is true that nothing beats fresh picked local berries, imported varieties keep me happy long before our season really kicks in. These berries traveled all the way from California to Quebec, cushioned on a bed of bubble wrap. No picking through this box to find the perfect ones, each berry is perfect with bright green leaves and lovely shades of fiery oranges and reds.

Fresh Fruit II

This is my second take on last week's subject matter. Taking full advantage of what is known as "artistic license" I made the pot a little wider than the first painting so it would sit better in this canvas shape. I eliminated the top berry and added a few scattered ones leading the eye of the viewer from left to right to rest on the pot. And to fill out the composition and add a spark to my reds, I added a few green grapes.

Where last week's piece was restful, this one has more movement owing not only to the placement of the objects but also the addition of the complementary greens.

Jumbo Berries

Strawberries are popular subjects, perhaps because they often speak of a long awaited spring. These were huge berries, making it easier for me to get a really good look at them. I was mindful not to include too much detail when doing the berries, as they quickly lose that fresh appeal if overworked.

I could not make up my mind whether this painting should be a 12" square canvas or a more elongated shape, so I decided to do both. Each canvas shape has it's own dynamic. While a square canvas is usually restful, an elongated shape calls for tension in a composition. Next week you will see my second variation.

I stumbled across this new variety of apples at my local grocer and was admittedly drawn not only to the colour, but also to the name. My Internet "research" tells me that this is indeed a relatively new offering, coming out of Eastern Washington, and is named after the growers' late grandmother. It is my hope that the original Lady Alice would have liked my interpretation of her namesake.

Mushrooms are lovely organic shapes with a wonderful range of subtle colours. Adding the tomato to the mix brings a bright colour note and allows for some reflections of red that serve to enliven the earth tones. The blue bowl acts as anchor and sets up my "go-to" triangular composition.

After some large canvases, I was ready for a small format. Large works take a lot of concentration, and I have to be careful not to get disinterested after a few days of looking at the same objects. A small piece comes together more quickly and is a shorter commitment. This jug and fruit seemed a natural pair for a 12" square canvas.

Citrus Brights

  While I originally had a white plate in the background, I swapped it for the red one at the last minute. While the white suited my morning theme better, the red raised the colour excitement to a new high. I have learned that it is often better to let my heart dictate decisions and leave my head to more mundane affairs.  

A note:  
While placing my last order for supplies I mistakenly ordered Ultramarine Blue GS (green shade) instead of my usual French Ultramarine Blue... and what a happy mistake this turned out to be! Rather than return it, I thought I'd give it a try. The bright, fresh greens in this piece are made using this new blue and I have now added this colour to my palette.

Mango

Mangoes offer, quite simply, the most spectacular range of colour to the artist. However, the shape of the mango is another thing and quite a challenge. I’ve lost count of the number of compositions I tried before arriving at this one, although I think my frustrated attempts paid off quite handsomely with this small painting. And as a bonus, while I fussed and struggled, the mango ripened and became even more intensely coloured.

"Juice Bar" is the sum total of the lessons I learned doing the small series of glasses, presented February 10, 17 and 24.

Again, the task with a large painting comprised of mostly perishable fruit, was to get down as much information as possible in the first two days of work. Over the years, I have developed my own way of "taking notes" with paint that allows me to bring a work to completion long after my set has changed from fresh to foul.

Pure & Simple

I built this composition around the clementine, and I did so quickly knowing that the attached leaf would not last long under my hot lights. After fussing around for a day I settled on this somewhat simple grouping and got down to painting. A few hours into the painting process I started to think that this was turning into quite a little gem. The brightness of the jug, the heat of the reds and oranges, the unexpected impact of the blue handle were all adding up to equal quite a powerful piece.

Using fruit to define the glass was a fun challenge for Fruit Tonic, while the reflection of the tabletop in the dark juice provided added interest to the Cranberry piece.

This is the last pairing in the glass series as I am anxious to move onto some larger pieces. I've enjoyed this format and I may well come back to it... in fact I've a mind to try putting all six pieces together into one large piece.

The Glass Series: Pink Grapefruit and Mango
(14" x 10" each, oil on canvas)

Glass selection is key when choosing a size and shape for this series. While I have many glasses, not all are suitable for this shape canvas and the tone of the series. The colours of this pair were an absolute joy to work with.
