Fruit Squares: Yellow Plums
(12" x 12", oil on canvas)

My husband, Brian, came home with these perfect yellow plums knowing I would flip over their color. They were almost past their prime, so I had time only to do a small piece. I did manage to capture the color and heavy ripeness of the plums in one sitting, leaving the rest of the piece to be worked out at a more leisurely pace.

Rainiers
(18" x 24" oil on canvas)

Rainier cherries have a wonderful personality. They are beautifully two-toned and have sturdy bright green stems that curve in all directions. They do not however, last long under hot lights and I find I must paint quickly. This is actually a great exercise for me, as occasionally I tend to over-paint, sacrificing the freshness of my strokes for the sake of accuracy.

Cast Iron II
(24" x 24", oil on canvas)

This past summer I picked up some new great props to add to my collection, such as this cast iron pot.

At first glance its finish is dull and lacking in color, but back home in my studio under lights it comes alive. The rough uneven edges are a joy to paint particularly when juxtaposed with the fragile skin of the tomato. A close look at the cast iron reveals many subtle colors and shifting tones, and the linear handle is a great foil for the bulk of the pot.

Bartletts
(24" x 24" oil on canvas)

For me, any excuse to paint pears is a good one! A long time favourite subject of artists, pears have a sensual shape and a wonderful range of colors. Using my preferred (of late) central composition, I chose to emphasize the sculptural quality of both the fruit and the bowl. The warmth of this piece is further heightened by the cool underside of the bowl and the cast shadow.
