Cast of Characters
(12" x 36", oil on canvas)

Come Halloween, pumpkins are not the only bounty to be found at the market. Gourds come in all shapes and sizes and are irresistible to me; in fact, I buy them by the bushel! I like to paint these characters as if they are members of a family, all distinct but somehow related. While this is an odd format for me, I found it suited this subject well.

Blue Cloth
(24" x 24", oil on canvas)

I had originally hoped to do a piece just with fabrics, but I found a clear focus point was needed to sustain my interest (and that of the viewer!). Adding the bowl and fruit gave me an anchor for the composition leaving me free to have fun with the folds of cloth.

This painting is sold.

Fundamentals
(28" x 22", oil on canvas)

This trio of items sits comfortably within my often-preferred "golden triangle" composition. While it is a simple arrangement, there is actually lots for me to work with; most obviously, the red tablecloth and how it's color is reflected up into all the objects. I also really like how the peach seems to bleed into the tabletop, firmly anchoring it from rolling off the edge.

Small Crock II
(12" x 12", oil on canvas)

The proportions of this crock suited this little composition; and its putty color makes the bright fruit almost neon by comparison.

Poème
(18" x 24" oil on canvas)

I paired the simple shape of this old enamelware covered canister with small fresh picked apples. When working with very few items, each seemingly small detail can have a huge impact so, after some consideration, I changed the trim color of the canister from it's original blue to bright red, improving the overall color composition and flow.
