Pomegranate Parts and Pieces
(24" x 12", oil on canvas)
As pomegranates are often in abundance during the holiday season, I though it to be a fitting subject as we head into the New Year. I used the same perspective and format as last week's piece, substituting these red beauties for the apples.
Perhaps 2011 is the year I will actually try to eat a pomegranate. Despite the heralded health benefits, I suspect they are still more fun to paint than to eat.

Apple Parts and Pieces
(24" x 12", oil on canvas)
On this, the last Painting of the Week Wednesday before Christmas, I wanted to present a painting done in the palette of the season, red and green. This higher perspective in combination with a vertical format gives an unusual dynamic to the composition.

Ginger Golds in Folds
(24" x 24", oil on canvas)
More apples, more folds, more fun!
This painting took me a few tries to get the right balance of dark background to light foreground. As in last week's piece, the subtle suggestion of the table’s edge keeps the apples from tumbling into space and serves to dissect the foreground in two planes.

Threesome
(16" x 16", oil on canvas)
As an artist I find it incredibly rewarding to create a successful painting with so few items. This was one of those all too rare occasions where the composition felt almost effortless.

Ginger Golds
(18" x 24", oil on canvas)
Every year I fall in love with a new variety of apples, and this year it was the delicate colouring and beautifully rounded shape of Ginger Golds that captured my heart. To keep the focus on the delicate colour story, I kept the composition to a simple arrangement of rounds, the apples and plate, sitting within a grid of fabric folds.
