Despite their diminutive size, these pears pack a great colour punch. By placing them on a highly reflective surface, I was able to exploit the colour further in the foreground. The black background was key in playing up the brightness of both the pears and vase.

Sonya Apples on Green

The green cloth was a nice change of pace from my usual white and serves as a wonderful contrast to the reds and yellows of the apples. Keeping both the foreground and the background dark provides a heightened sense of drama and encourages the viewer's eye to concentrate on my main subject.

Cherry Glass

I picked up this glass months ago, drawn to its simple shape and fleur-de-lis motif. Its proportions sit comfortably in the square format and I felt the chunkiness of the glass contrasted nicely with the linear cherry stems and the delicate, frayed edge of the white linen.

Chardonnay

In a world seemingly populated by drinkers of red wine, I often find myself alone in extolling the virtues of white. My white of choice is Chardonnay, and what better to pair with white wine than a few pears.

Triumvirate
(18" x 18", oil on canvas)

By positioning my light source to pass through both transparent bottles, I was able to pick up beautiful reflections of the red and yellow liquids, enlivening what may have been a rather sombre piece. I was also mindful not to over-work the delicately frayed edges of the linen cloth. (And while this little texture is simply a small detail, I loved the effect, so you may expect to see it resurface in another piece.)
