I believe the strength of this piece comes from a good range of subject sizes, from the smallest grape to the large white jug. This mix of shapes, in concert with the almost unbeatable combination of reds and greens, makes this painting successful.

Four More Gourds, I and II

My gourd collection from last fall was still begging for another painting (or in this case two). For me the fun aspect of these pieces lies in the arrangement; which gourd to go beside which and in what order? My aim is always to have a harmony of shapes, colors, sizes and textures, and then let the individual personalities of each organic shape come alive.

I'm starting with a quiet piece, a tone that has definite appeal to me after all the holiday excitement of the past few weeks. Muted colors and a dissolving horizon line describe a peaceful harmony between objects, creating a quiet moment.

Over the years, wine bottles and fruit have been done and done again by artists everywhere, and with good reason. They are a lovely subject and one most everyone can easily relate to. Here I approach the subject using a somewhat unorthodox composition implying an "after the party" moment.

One Fig

Figs are like jewels to this painter. Here the complexity of the facets and colors of the single fig are contrasted against the smooth surfaces of the jar and bowl. The seasonal combination of red and green seemed timely for this, the week before Christmas.

This is the third in a series of shell paintings. Here, for contrast, I've paired a spiky shell with a soft blue cloth. As in the first two, I continue to use a book as a pedestal element and stones to echo the sea theme.
