The square format is fast becoming one of my new favourites. Deliberate central placement of the objects eliminates tension and encourages the eye to relax and stay awhile. The title says it all.

Rouge sur Rouge

Blanc sur Blanc

I loved the unassuming shape of these small bistro-type glasses. Here I use the half pear shape to help describe the shape of the glass, the almost non-existent color of the wine is given a boost by the reflected green grapes.

Two Clementines and a Bowl

Bursting with flavor and color, these clementines do double duty, first as props, then as breakfast.

In this painting I've tried to recreate, on canvas, the welcoming explosion of taste this jewel-like fruit provides on a dreary March day.

Blue Jug

Finding cherries at this time of year was an unexpected gift! Here the blue jug and dark background serve to anchor the saturated colors of the fruit. I am aware that my recent work has come to include more instances of hot color... I'm not sure if this trend will continue, or if it is simply my response to February's cold & dreary days.

Bottle & Bowl
(24"x 18" oil on canvas)

While the format of this painting is vertical, I deliberately planned a secondary left-to-right movement following the path of the branch. Though comprised of a very few elements, there are many small details for me to explore. I think it is these observations (the fine edge of the label on the bottle, the reflected greens and reds) that make a big difference in the overall success of a piece and serve to keep the viewer involved.

Two Figs and a Peach
(18" x 24" oil on panel)

I purposely chose to post this painting on Valentine's Day because of its heart-throbbing color and intimate composition. While this is a simple piece, rendered in a smaller format, the colors in combination with contrast provide drama. Critics have often remarked that red is my signature color. I'm not entirely sure I agree, although in this case the painting really does hinge on the use of red.
